Egyptian army chief Field Marshal Abdel Fattah al-Sisi will meet military leaders Wednesday to resign his post, according to state media reports, paving the way for his long-anticipated run for the presidency.
State-run newspaper Al-Ahram reported that al-Sisi is expected to announce the decision in a broadcasted statement, Reuters reports. The army commander must resign from the army in order to run for president.
The army deposed president Mohamed Morsi last year in the midst of mass protests against Morsi’s increasingly authoritarian rule, killing over a thousand of the former president’s Muslim Brotherhood supporters in widespread unrest. Broadly supported by Egyptians who opposed Mohamed Morsi’s presidency, al-Sisi is likely to win presidential elections expected later this year.
